Silk Screen Printing with Susan Mathews

Spent the day yesterday doing a workshop of silk screen printing with Susan Mathews.
Great day learning how to do the process of printing and the making of screens.
 Susan demonstrated the techniques.

Raided the veggie garden before I left.
Tomato, strawberry, eggplant and apricot leaves.
 1st - Screen printed.
These were done using the large wooden screens.
Reverse side of the above fabric
2nd - another piece of fabric was placed over the 1st and the excess paint transferred by rubbing.
3rd -  excess paint left on leaves, pressed onto fabric.
The black lines are the stains of the tomato stems.
They didn't transfer to the fabric after screen printing these dried leaves.

We were taught how to make a smaller cardboard screen.
The screen is sheer curtain scrim.
Cut out pattern to use in the small screen.
I enjoyed using the smaller screens.

What Flower Is That?

John came home last night with a beautiful bunch of flowers for me.
Has anyone seen a Chrysanthemum in these colours?
After 35 years he knows me so well....he said they tied the bunch with a paper type ribbon, because he thought I may be able to use the ribbon for textiles.
...Love Him.

BORO Exhibition, Kimono House, Melbourne

BORO, meaning "rags" and a term that describes "patched and mended fabrics, showcased some pieces of hand stitched clothing and photography.
It is usually clothing and bed covers, sewn during the 19th and early 20th century.
Japanese families repaired and recycled everything, handing them down for generations.
When the fabric is worn through and in need of patching with the rags, it is sewn on the inside of the garment, so only the sashiko stitching is seen on the outside.

 Indigo dyed fabrics used.

ZOKIN - Dust Cloths
When the garments are no longer wearable, some of the fabric is made into dust cloths or perhaps nappies, nothing is wasted. The sashiko stitching is to give the fabric strength.
SODENASHI - Farmer's Vest, designed for Sledge Pulling.

Child's Garment
 Woman's Undergarment

Kimono fabric, 12m in length after it is unpicked.
A child's kimono is 8m in length.

Chinese New Year and Travel Expo

Headed into Jeff's Shed this morning for the Travel Expo.
Went by the Atrium at Crown to see the Chinese New Year display.
Beautiful Lanterns hanging from the ceiling.
 Red is a happy colour!!
Noticed this handmade fish adorning the window of a Seafood Restaurant.
2016 - The Year of the Monkey.
The display were of previous year's symbols.
I am the Year of the Snake, my worst fear and I am terrified of even tiny lizards, couldn't bring myself to take a photo of the cobra.

At Winter School this year, my class title is "From One Place to Another"
"your work will be based upon a journey or walk"
One is allowed to change one's mind, aren't they!!!!
After viewing the Japanese exhibitors at the Travel Expo, I have decided to do a journey through the 4 Seasons of Japan. I have visited in Winter and Autumn, and on my recent trip, the Cherry Blossom had already started to bloom, even though extremely early for Spring.
I collected brochures today and in one were the descriptions of each of the seasons.
I spent this afternoon cutting out pictures for my Winter School notebook.

Salvos Pick Up

For my class at Winter School I needed some soft linen type fabric.
Paid the Salvos a visit this morning and found these 5 linen 10" squares with an edging.
A bargain at $4.50. Also found some cheese cloth at Spotlight.

Open weave and soft to handle.
Orange and Cinnamon tea bags, the smell wafted through the house, beautiful.
It reminded me of Christmas.
Moroccan Mint and one tea bag of Pomegranate and Raspberry
They only changed a few shades, happy with them as you can see a small difference.
The other 3 are stark white. Might try one with the blackcurrant tea bag.
