This village are well know for their houses constructed in an architectural style know as
gassho-zukuri (prayer-hands construction) style.
Shirakawa-go means White River Old District.
Thatched and steeply slanting roof resembling two hands joined in prayer. The design is very strong and allows the houses to withstand and shed the weight of the region's heavy snow falls in winter.
